Oral Mucositis Awareness Day

#MoreThanASore, It’s Mucositis

For the past few years, the Oral Mucositis Awareness Day (OMAD) theme, #MoreThanASore, has been about raising awareness that mucositis is more than just a minor sore—it’s a painful and serious side effect—one that can happen to anyone going through cancer treatment.

For the next few years, we will build on that foundation in two ways:

  1. Naming mucositis clearly

  2. Evolving awareness into understanding

#MoreThanASore, It’s Mucositis

When it comes to Oral Mucositis, patients report they lack support, information, and often care from their medical team and their families.* As a result, many are left searching for answers on their own, looking up terms like canker sores, chemo sores, radiation ulcers, and raw patches – without realizing their severe mouth pain is a specific, well-documented side effect of cancer treatment.

Using the medical term "oral mucositis" is the first step toward better care, support, and conversations about management and treatment. It also helps caregivers and others understand that mucositis isn’t just a typical mouth sore—it’s a distinct condition with severe negative impacts that can't be compared to anything they’ve experienced.

Your Journey, Your Story – Information
That Speaks to Your Symptoms

Patient stories have helped raise awareness that mucositis is a serious and common side effect. Now, we’re taking the next step by empowering those going through cancer treatment with the clarity and tools needed to recognize, understand, and manage mucositis. These resources explain how mucositis develops, progresses, and affects daily life, all while avoiding confusing medical jargon. Designed specifically for patients, they focus on the real-life experience of symptoms and their impact.

“I couldn’t sleep”

"Mouth sores, throat sores, cracked lips, and tongue lesions have been awful and a constant throughout my 5+ years of fighting cancer. At one point they were so bad I couldn’t even sleep." - J.J. Singleton
